Your horse can drink twice as much water in July as in April, and your trough can grow algae several times faster. Those two curves cross every summer, and the trough that needed attention monthly in spring now needs it weekly
The consensus from equine extension specialists and veterinarians is consistent: clean troughs weekly during summer, check them daily, and clean sooner if the water looks or smells off.
Here is what sits behind that recommendation, and why the equine version of this problem is more serious than it is for cattle.
Summer roughly doubles what your horse drinks
A mature horse at rest in mild weather drinks somewhere in the range of 5 to 12 gallons a day, with University of Georgia extension guidance putting the working range at approximately 5 to 15 gallons per day depending on temperature, humidity and activity level.
Heat changes that quickly. The same average horse that drinks 5 to 10 gallons at 68°F will take 11 to 15 gallons at 86°F, and one exercising moderately in 95°F heat will consume 19 to 24 gallons. In hot, humid work, a horse’s water requirement can climb to as much as three times maintenance.
Sweat losses are the reason. After one bout of light exercise a horse produces roughly a gallon of sweat, and with heavy exercise that can reach five gallons.
Lactating mares, horses in work, and older horses all sit at the higher end of these ranges.
The equine-specific risk: dehydration and colic
This is where horses differ from cattle in a way worth taking seriously.
Reduced water intake is a well-recognized contributor to impaction colic. When gut contents lose moisture, they move more slowly and are more likely to lodge. A dirty trough that discourages drinking is therefore not just a management annoyance. It is a colic risk factor sitting in your pasture.
Horse owners tend to catch this late, because the early signs are subtle. A sudden decrease in your horse’s normal drinking habits is often a more useful signal than the total volume consumed. If you know what your horse usually drinks, a drop is your earliest warning.
If a horse stops drinking for more than a day, that warrants a call to your veterinarian.
Horses are fussier than you think
The practical reason clean water matters is palatability. Horses have a sensitive sense of smell and will simply decline water they find unappealing.
Warm or stagnant water is unappealing to horses, particularly once algae, insects or debris have accumulated in the trough. Research also shows horses prefer water at around 68°F and reduce consumption when water is cold or near freezing, which is the winter version of the same palatability problem.
Horse Sport offers the test that is hard to argue with: ask yourself whether you would drink it. If not, do not expect your horse to.
One practical consequence of that sensitivity: if you use soap to clean, rinse thoroughly. Soap that is off-putting to a horse’s sense of smell can cause them to stop drinking.
What the specialists actually recommend
University of Minnesota Extension is the most useful source here, because their equine team has studied this directly. Their guidance is to clean tanks often, even in winter, to avoid algae growth and unclean conditions, and they note that algae may cause your horse to drink less and can be toxic in some cases.
Penn State Extension recommends general cleaning on an as-needed or weekly basis to remove algae buildup and debris, plus a thorough deep clean once or twice a year. For the deep clean, their protocol is draining the trough and scrubbing with mild soap or a 10% bleach solution and a stiff brush, letting the bleach solution sit for 15 minutes, then rinsing at least twice before refilling.
Horse Sport puts the practical cadence at emptying and cleaning every one or two weeks, with the caveat that frequency depends on factors like whether the trough sits in direct sunlight and how many horses drink from it.
The goldfish question, settled by research
This one comes up constantly, and there is now real evidence.
University of Minnesota researchers tested it and published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science. The study found that goldfish did not improve water quality, had no effect on algae, and had a high death rate.
The survey data alongside it is the more revealing part. Twelve percent of respondents had never cleaned their horses’ tanks, and of those, 86 percent were using or had used fish to maintain water quality.
In other words, the main effect of goldfish is not cleaner water. It is a persuasive reason not to clean the trough.
Kentucky Equine Research’s Dr. Crandell offers a similar caution about the other popular shortcut. Bleach added to a trough may suppress algae for a day, but in a trough exposed to sunlight the chlorine evaporates within about 24 hours and stops working.
Neither shortcut replaces draining and scrubbing.
Mosquitoes and West Nile
This risk is specific to horses and gets overlooked.
In summer heat, mosquitoes can complete their life cycle in under a week, which makes standing water in horse troughs a prime mosquito source. Mosquito abatement districts specifically ask horse owners to make sure troughs are emptied or cleaned at least once a week.
Horses are susceptible to West Nile virus, and an effective vaccine is available, with vaccination by a licensed veterinarian strongly recommended.
Weekly draining breaks the mosquito life cycle before larvae mature. That alone justifies the cadence, independent of algae.
Your summer trough schedule
Daily: look at it. Water level, floating debris, visible algae, anything dead in there. Five seconds while you are already walking past.
Weekly: drain fully, scrub the walls and floor with a stiff brush, rinse, refill. This is the core habit. It breaks the mosquito cycle and prevents biofilm from establishing.
Twice a year: the deep clean with a 10% bleach solution, 15 minutes of contact time, then rinse at least twice.
Immediately, regardless of schedule: after heavy rain brings runoff in, if manure ends up in the tank, if you find a dead bird or rodent, or if you notice any horse drinking less than usual.
Also worth doing: clean the ground around the trough. Manure buildup nearby contaminates the water and attracts flies.
Why weekly does not happen
Nobody disputes the recommendation. They skip it because draining a full stock tank is genuinely awful.
A 100-gallon tank holds over 800 pounds of water. Bucketing it out takes 30 to 60 minutes and leaves your back unhappy. Tipping only works if the tank is small, unplumbed, and you are willing to flood the area around it. Siphoning works if you have the elevation for it, which most people do not.
That effort gap is the whole reason troughs get cleaned monthly instead of weekly.
